King Shaka Heritage Route is located in Ballito and is one of Ballito's
Cultural Sites, it follows in the footsteps of one of the great Zulu Chiefs.
King Shaka Zulu moulded dozens of scattered clans into a powerful united force,
the Zulus dominated territory between the Lembombo Mountains (which is known
today as the Swaziland border) to the Eastern Cape, the route is a celebration
of the kingdom. The King Shaka Heritage Route's goal is to keep the rich
historical and cultural heritage alive and to make sure that the local community
benefits from the tourism in the KwaDukuza region.
Places of interest include:
- High Rock - Where King Shaka Zulu would sit and plan his military
tactics
- Observation Rock - Where King Shaka Zulu would watch his army maneuvers
on the flatland below.
- King Shaka's Spring - Where King Shaka Zulu's handmaidens drew water
- King Shaka's Pool and Cave - Here King Shaka Zulu bathed and rested
- Mavivane Execution Rock - Where King Shaka Zulu issued judgment on
rebels and enemies on top of this cliff, the rebels and enemies would be
clubbed over their heads and thrown onto the rocks below as legend has it.
- Shaka's Trees - Shaka's Trees are almost 200 years old and were found
within the town of KwaDukuza, the trees include Indaba Tree (where Kind
Shaka Zulu held council) and the Assassination Tree (where King Shaka Zulu
is reputed to have been killed in 1828)
