Vredendal lies in the fertile, green Olifants River Valley, just 300 km north of Cape Town and is famous for its wild flowers during spring. Directly translated, Vredendal means "valley of peace" and the modern and fully developed town of Vredendal does indeed lie surrounded by the imposing and calming peaks of Gifberg, Maskam and Koebee, creating a beautiful and inviting setting.
Vredendal is an ideal base from which to explore the Namaqualand, west coast and the Cederberg Mountains. It is on the famous Olifants River wine route and there are a handful of cellars that are worth a visit in and around Vredendal, many of whom have won gold and silver awards. Vredendal lies within the Matzikama region, known for its contrasting sandy plains, rugged mountains and lush riverbeds. The area appears almost semi-arid but has some of the most richly diverse succulent plant species in the world.
Vredendal is only an hour's drive from the beaches of Strandfontein and Doringbaai and there are a number of hikes in the surrounding mountains.
